Pipetting

Pipetting can be a highly repetitive task, coupled with forceful exertion of the fingers/ thumb, and awkward positioning of fingers, arms and shoulders. Here are some tips to make pipetting more comfortable:

  • Select pipettes with low force triggers
  • Choose a pipette that is optimal for hand size
  • Plan and schedule mini-breaks, preferably every 30 minutes
  • Choose the pipette that will minimize repetition i.e . using multichannel or repeat dispense pipettes when applicable
  • Alternate hands or use both hands
  • Organize supplies so excessive reaching, twisting and bending are eliminated
  • Avoid resting elbows on a hard edge of bench or table
  • Choose pipettes that allows triggers to be activated by more than one finger
